A set of 30 punchy, funny, thought-provoking cartoon films drawing attention to various environmental problems - desertification, pollution, waste and consumption. On a more optimistic note, the young animators also advocate solutions such as recycling, saving resources, waste minimisation and above all a shift in attitude and values within our industrial society. This compilation of environmental animated films is one programme in Global View’s Earthscope series. It comprises a variety of public service announcements (PSAs), government-sponsored shorts, campaign films by non-governmental organisations, and independent works, from Canada, the US, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and the UK. The programme shows that animation is effective in explaining environmental issues. In one PSA, commissioned by the Centre for Marine Conservation, Popeye, the classic spinach-munching cartoon character, catches his archrival Bluto dumping plastic waste into the ocean. Popeye says to his girlfriend Olive Oil, "Doesn’t he realise critters are strangulating in all this plastic junk?" and puts an end to Bluto’s irresponsible ways. |
