Death In The Rain Forest
Genre: Documentary Region: Brazil Duration: 40’ Language: English
|
Chico Mendes, leader of the Brazilian rubber-tappers, was assassinated in December 1988 because of his opposition to ranchers burning Amazon rainforest to provide pasture for their cattle. The burning of the rainforest is estimated to contribute about 20 percent of the gases currently contributing to global warming. But the Brazilian economy is crippled by debt – and one way for the government to earn foreign loans is to exploit the wealth of the Amazon. This edited version of a BBC investigative documentary analyses the conflict facing Brazil – and many other countries in the developing world: a conflict between the imperatives of development and the need to protect the environment. |
