Campaign to achieve the Millennium Development Goals We are the first generation that could see poverty and hunger eliminated ! Another World is Truly Possible ! The Millennium Declaration was endorsed by all 189 member states of the United Nations at the end of the Millennium Summit held in New York in September 2000. The declaration listed eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that would combat hunger and poverty and improve education, health, the status of women, and the environment by the year 2015. Goal 1: Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty Goal 2: Achieve universal primary educationGoal 3: Promote gender equality and empower womenGoal 4: Reduce child mortalityGoal 5: Improve maternal healthGoal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseasesGoal 7: Ensure environmental sustainabilityGoal 8: Develop a global partnership for developmentThese goals are an international commitment by all governments, agreed by the heads of states. They are interrelated, so fulfilling one helps to fulfil the others. The first seven goals include targets to be achieved in poor countries. The MDGs represent a partnership between rich and poor countries, in which each takes on responsibilities. In the case of poor countries, they have pledged to undertake certain policy changes and to strengthen governance. At the Millennium Summit, world leaders also took on an eighth Goal. The key elements of Goal 8 pledge financial support and policy changes in debt relief, trade and economic governance to assist poor countries’ domestic efforts to meet the first seven Goals. We have the financial resources to achieve these Goals. We now need the political will. In order to achieve these Goals, we must make sure that our Governments keep their promises of making the MDGs a reality.
